“If we do not control traditional risk factors – obesity, hypertension and diabetes – we’ll have a wave of cardiovascular disease in 10, 15, 20 years,” said Lee Schwamm, MD, vice chairman of neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital Boston.

For the study, the researchers used hospital records in 41 states of the CDC to compare income for ischemic stroke in mid-1990 with those of mid-2000.

Among children 5 to 14, the type of stroke increased by 31% in men and 36% among girls. However, shooting only accounted for five of every 10,000 hospital admissions per 10,000 boys and four girls in this age group.
The opposite pattern was observed among the elderly. In people aged 45 to 64 strokes decreased by 12% and 13% in men and women, respectively. The set of 65 strokes down 25% and 28% for men and women, respectively.
Despite the decline, still shots to take their heaviest toll among the elderly, says George. In the period 2006-2007, accounted for 303 hospitalizations per 10,000 in men aged 65 years and 274 admissions per 10,000 women of the same age, she says.

Increased awareness Carrera
Schwamm WebMD that the decline in stroke rates among older people is probably due to greater awareness and better prevention and treatment of traditional risk factors like high blood pressure.

The increase in youth is more likely a reflection of better detection advanced MRI, Schwamm said. Because obese children are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood, which are not translated into higher rates of work until years down the road, he says.
